wildravenSo we got one under out belts... but it was not easy.
This is one of the two "unusual" teams on our schedule. Unusual = not high school JV, but all levels between grades 6 and 9, from beginners to ones looking for ISL scholarships for next year.
They had a ton of girls, some bad, some ok, 2 that were amazing. Their goaltending was weak.
We jumped out to an early lead, 3-0, then 4-1. We were doing well... then came the 2nd period.
With their two amazing skaters leading the way, they stormed back to take a 5-4 lead while holding us to two shots on goal. We broke down... our system of break-outs... our confidence. My two very talented but young defensemen (both learning D) were rushing too much, trying to do it all by themselves, not passing to open teammates. They were trying to beat the opposing team single-handedly... and that's not going to happen when their top stars can shut down anyone we have. 2 shots all period...
My emphasis between the 2nd and 3rd was two-fold. People away from the puck needed to move and get open while people with the puck needed to look and find the open people.
We got one goal back.
After one of the duo made a bad decision and went too deep, forcing the other to face the opposing star one-on-one (resulting in a penalty on us although she did stop the rush), I had to be forceful rather than encouraging, forbidding them from rushing anymore that game.
We scored two more in the final 5 minutes to seal the 7-5 win.
First time we've ever beaten that team, first win of this season. Lots of different people got into the scoring with 3 of my 4 lines putting at least one in.
It's good to win, but now I need to make sure the duo do not alienate themselves from the rest of the team with selfish play.
Practice tomorrow...
The real test comes Friday when we face a rematch with the team that beat us in our first game of the season.
