I am moved now.

Overall, I would say our new place is so much better than our old place.

The bad:

1 The A/C does not work as well as at our old place... heck, a lot worse than in Wakefield

2 On 2nd floor instead of 4th floor.

3 R has a longer commute to work. It is slightly longer than we expected and an uber-long commute can make her really miserable. (I hope her next job is in Boston.)

4 Versison *still* has not gotten our phone hooked up.

5 Comcast tried to screw us and when I caught them and called to $%&*, they apologized and gave us significant discounts (1/2 of what we were paying). The annoyance is bad, the price is good.

6 The kitchen does not have as much storage space.

7 The elevator is slow and the stairs shake a little (large metal set).

8 We've had to spend money on things like new curtains, etc.

9 Our balcony is narrower, making movement on it difficult with furniture.

10 We have no dining room. Our dining area is essentially part of the living room.

The good:

1 Huge mo-fo bedroom. Formerly a studio apt turned into a bedroom. Heck, we have a king sized bed, three bookcases, three dressers/chests of drawers, two large closets, night tables, and a love seat in there as well as our decorative set-up. It feels sort of luxurious. We're gonna be spoiled forever now.

2 A lot better insulated against the sound. Heck, the fire station across the street doesn't even bother us.

3 Open kitchen. I can now cook without feeling like I am seperated in a different room.

4 We can walk to sub places, a restaurant, Brooks pharmacy, or the commuter rail.

5 So much closer to Somerville and that whole group.

6 Huge walk-in closet in the office. (I can store reffing stuff, umpiring stuff, work stuff, coats and sweatshirts, hockey shirts, and even every-day stuff in there. I like closets with their own light switch.

7 My bathroom. wow... I feel like I am in a fancy hotel. The bathroom is all new and it was done in a very "fancy" style. My toilet is the right height (Wakefield was too tall, Waltham was too low, Medford is juuuust right).

8 Our office is bigger *and* much brighter.

9 My kitchen is very modern and feels clean.

10 Closets, closets, closets! We have 8 closets, one of them walk-in! Heck, we're using one of them as a pantry due to the smaller storage space in the kitchen.

11 I like our landlords. He used to work with me and she used to work with R. They even surprised us with a gift certificate to a local Bistro when we moved in as a welcome. I know it seems small, but it makes such a huge difference.

12 Plenty of parking

13 They gave us an extra bookcase... and it fits in the office!

14 On site repair/maintenance person.

The ex:

1 I really dislike our old landlord.

2 When she saw we moved our stuff out early, she wanted the keys right away. She quickly backed down knowing that we can then sue for that last portion of the rent.

3 She does not get it. She made tons of improvements while we were there, had people walking in and out on weekends (sometimes without calling!), lied to us along the way about her intentions to sell, then had open houses where strangers just wandered unaccompanied through my stuff in my rooms, had inspectors and repair people enter our apartment whenever she felt like, one time even walking in on me in the bathroom without knocking because this guy from the bank thought no one was home. We had to lose weekends looking for a new place, we had to spend months packing everything we owned, spend $2600 due to the overlapping rent plus movers. R and I lost another summer. And she thinks giving us that $850 off of the last month rent was just fine to make up for all that.

4 She did not believe me when I told her the smoke detecor did not work and that it did not use batteries.
They finally sent someone in who said, "gee, this smoke detector does not work and it does not use batteries!"

5 I remember our first day in the old apartment a year ago: She did not believe me that there was gas leaking in the utility closet. An hour later, she did not believe NStar as they shut off the gas line stating that their detector/alarm was indicating a gas leak in our utility closet.

6 We put up with windows that leaked air like a screen all winter while paying the heating bills. She promised if we put up with it that one winter, she would save up enough money to repair them this summer so we'd have new, good windows this coming year.

7 The location of the old apartment sold us. We should have known with *that* price for a two bedroom, two bathroom 4th floor condo with balcony in Waltham... something was wrong. The previous people had moved out after one year. One year of heating bills that reach $250 make you question the breeze coming through your windows.

I am actually excited about our new place. I can't wait to finish unpacking so I can just sit here, look around, and sigh...

Everything happens for a reason

May I recommend a little ritual for the new place. Anyone out there can correct me if I'm wrong: take a broom, and sweep clockwise around the apartment sweeping out any bad energies. Gives you a blank slate in a place that you seem to like a lot. I wish you two health, happiness and prosperity in your new place.
