For those who know laptop computers and wireless routers...

I borrowed a laptop computer from a friend and bought a wireless router.

The router is now set up via cable for our two regular computers and working well.

I configured the router and laptop to use the same encription key and router name.

On the laptop, when you go to the lower right of the desktop, claims it has a connection and an excellent signal.

Yet when I go to internet explorer, it claims it does not have an internet connection.

What do I need to do now to have the computer use this wireless router as it's connection to find the internet?

Thank you!

Have you tried rebooting the router, and/or trying a different browser?

here is my guess.

every piece of network hardware has what is called a MAC address. Comcast filters its cable connections based on this MAC address. When you first configured your computer with the comcast software, it registered this address with the home office.

Your router has a different mac address than your computer and is probably not getting a good connection to the outside world, so even though you have great signal to your router you are not getting out to comcast and the internet as a whole.

I would suggest either going through your router settings to try and find a place to set the MAC address (some of them can clone the address of a computer... if you find the right configuration screen and you are using your old computer you can clone the address into the router from there... or you can call comcast and have them register the new MAC address.

They might give you a hard time about the router... I really don't know, I try to avoid telling them anything about what I am doing on my side of their connection just to be on the safe side.

Good luck.

Comcast will not give you a hard time about the router if you tell them "I'm using a router as a firewall". They will register the MAC address on the router, and you should be ok.

woo-hoo!

My ex-roommate talked me through it and it works now.

We just needed to reset the router... then unplug modem, unplug router... then plug them in after appropriate delays.

Then the wireless was able to find and connect.

yay

Thank you everyone!
(hugs)

so... do I set up the security feature???
