Volume in our society

wildravenWhy is it in our society that, in order to enjoy a concert at a normal level, we all have to bring and use ear plugs?
Why, why, WHY do we ALWAYS turn up the volume at concerts to such levels that we all just expect to need earplugs, whether outdoors or indoors?
When I go to watch the Pops play at the Hatch Shell, I don't need earplugs. I really enjoy the music much more when I can hear it at a normal volume.
Can anyone explain why they ALWAYS turn up the volume to unhealthy levels at any rock concert???
