Why is it in our society that, in order to enjoy a concert at a normal level, we all have to bring and use ear plugs?

Why, why, WHY do we ALWAYS turn up the volume at concerts to such levels that we all just expect to need earplugs, whether outdoors or indoors?

When I go to watch the Pops play at the Hatch Shell, I don't need earplugs. I really enjoy the music much more when I can hear it at a normal volume.

Can anyone explain why they ALWAYS turn up the volume to unhealthy levels at any rock concert???

grrr........

Well WERE very close to the 30 foot speakers. Think about the poor people was , way ,way, way ,way, Up behind Home Plate. All we see was thier cellphone flashing, not even a body.
But then again, we were very close to the Bullpen, Pesky pole.
My Left ear is Still ringing. BUT WHAT A ROCKING TIME IT WAS!!!!!!
My Boss had Pity on me and sent me home early. So wound up after the show I lay in bed watching the clock go from 1Am - 3:30Am, humming the theme "Don't stand so close to me" then the alarm at 4:15A scared the shit out of me. I think I jumped 3 feet off the bed.

Absolutely good time

Just to clarify. Since I brought earplugs, I absolutely enjoyed the concert. I am just upset that I had to use them. I've also been in small venues where I've REALLY needed earplugs even more.

Thank you again!!!

I lack the knowledge to get into the knitty gritty but generally speaking, I believe it has to do with sound quality for those sitting further back.

Also, wasn't the show at Fenway? To put it mildly, Fenway is not actually set up for concerts and the sound system absolutely sucks for them. (Yes, I've been to concerts there, too.)

But I do feel your pain. I only recently, and grudgingly, started sometimes wearing ear plugs at concerts.

In part, it's because concert halls have gotten so *big*; in a small hall, while it's still (IMO) too loud, smart musicians play at low levels to smooth the sound. In a big venue, you need to play loud in order to reach the back.

At least, that's my opinion.
