There are 101 men to every 100 women

I was listening to an interview on NPR sometime this weekend, about Indians (the subcontinent kind, not the inhabitants who helped Pilgrims kind) preferring boys over girls, and using ultrasound to ensure the preferred result. The statistic cited (unsure if for India as a whole (unlikely) or a particular area) was for every 1000 boys, 750 girls are born. I was shocked; it's going to lead to big issues down the road...

The killing of girls

China is doing the same thing. The government is trying to limit the families to one child each. Meanwhile, the culture says that men take care of their parents in old age, not women. With ultrasounds to determine, the current practice for many families is to abort a girl but keep a boy. Although the next generation having so many men and not many women will result in a curbing of the population growth, the social problems which will undoubtedly arise could be horrible.
